Evil plant

Edit: I don't want to delete this post because it shows how "special" I am when it comes to plants – but yes, I know now that my nemesis are daylilies. They are currently living it up in a sunny part of my landscape. So everyone can rest easy. :)

I have met my nemesis.

Sure, it may look as easy to rip up, but it has 10-layers of evilness attached to it.

Look at all the roots – this thing terrifies the crap out of me. Any ideas on what it is?

Neighbors have told us it doesn't bloom, so a flower is out.

  1. Omg we have these everywhere in the front yard. Every year it gets worst! I have no clue what they're called.. lol

  2. jbsoffel – So, are you doing anything to try to fix it? We have 3 batches of them (all the grouping size in the photo) – I got 2 out of 3 groups out this weekend via shovel. I was able to get a lot of the roots up as well.

But if it's something that keeps coming back no matter what, I may just start trimming them.

  3. That's insane looking, I think it's related to the evil vines in my back yard...

  4. It's definitely related to the evil 'ground cover' plants in our sideyard. no matter how much I rip up, they just keep a-comin' back. Every year. ND winters can't even kill them.

  5. We have them too!! We bought our house at the end of the summer, so I didn't know if it would flower or not and haven't taken them out. Looks like I know my weekend plans now though... and those roots intimidate me so much!

  6. Samantha – They are a mutant, demon weed. Skip the little garden shovel, and go straight to the big one. Good luck. I have one batch left to do, and I'm definitely dreading it.

  8. They're not evil. They're daylillies which do flower.

  10. They are daylilies and those aren't roots, they're tubers.

  11. We have those too and they are the worst! Laddie & Anon are right, they will eventually bloom orange (in our case) lillies, but they seriously take over.

I spent forever trying to get them our of our flower bed, and they'll probably just come back :(
